“How can we pass through the city gates with this?” wondered the citizens of Ulm as they pondered over their cart laden cross-wise with wooden beams. They quickly took inspiration from a sparrow flying past just at the moment, carrying in its beak a piece of straw pointing forwards. The sparrow thus saved the city gates from certain demolition and so he became the heraldic animal of Ulm.
